My Design Philosophies.
Design should do a minimum of three things: be accessbile to the client/inhabitant, create a dialogue, and be able to stand alone. Specifically, the dialogue created can be among several people, or a more metaphorical dialogue between the environment as a whole and the space being designed. There is a quote by French novelist Antoine de Saint-Exupery that states, "a designer knows [she] has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away." I wholeheartedly believe in this statement and find it to be true when analyzing great architectural works.
I am also a painter, and take inspiration from colors, graphic patterns, and overall composition. It is my most consistent motivator, and helps me to not lose sight of a design concept.
Being fresh out of university (class of 2015!) my perspective is on the one hand sharp from my years of study, yet also unchallenged and therefore not completely formed by years of experience. I am so grateful for what I learned in college and now is the time to take it into the real world and put it to the test.
